Chapter 10
Rachel leaned against Noah in the backseat of Whit’s vehicle. As soon as they’d gotten in, he’d draped his arm around her and pulled her close. She remained in his embrace all the way back to Adair Acers. It was night and the events of the day had taken their toll.
Noah measured their progress along the winding road by the twists and turns, wishing the miles away so that he could get her back to the guesthouse where he had control of who moved in and out of contact with Rachel.
He felt responsible for her safety, telling himself it was out of obligation. He refused to let feelings get in the way.
Whit dropped Rachel and Noah at the guesthouse, where Landry handed off Sophia and climbed into her SUV to drive back to the main house.
While Rachel settled Sophia on her blanket on the bed in the spare bedroom, Noah made a thorough check of the house and double-checked the alarm system, doors and window locks before he was remotely satisfied.
Rachel met him in the hallway. “You should take a shower and go to bed. You have to be beat.”
He ran a hand through his hair and pasted a smile on his soot-stained face. The movement through his hair stirred up the charred scent of smoke. “I need to eat something.”
Rachel wrinkled her nose. “Tell you what. You have that shower, I’ll whip up something to eat.”
“A sandwich would be fine. I think there are some deli meats in the refrigerator. Don’t make it any harder than you have to. You’re tired, too.”
She pointed at the bandage on his arm. “Do you need to wrap your arm in a plastic bag to keep it from getting wet?”
He shook his head. “The doc gave me extra gauze and tape. I’ll just replace it after a shower.”
“I can help you with that.” She sighed. “I’m glad you were there to save Ruby.”
“Me, too.” He stared down at her with tired eyes.
For a moment she thought he was going to kiss her.
Noah stepped back. “I’ll have that shower. I stink.”
“Right. I’ll make that sandwich.”
“If you hear anything out of the ordinary, if you even think you hear anything, don’t hesitate. Come get me.”
She popped a salute, turned on her heels and marched to the kitchen before she fell into the man’s arms and kissed him. Rachel was so tired she wasn’t thinking straight. Now was not the time to be throwing herself at the man.
He must have left the bedroom and bathroom door open. She heard the shower come on and the sound of water hitting tile. Part of her wanted to join him and spend the next thirty minutes rubbing soap all over each other’s bodies. The other part wanted to play it safe, not fall any deeper in love than she already was. Giving her whole heart could get her hurt really badly. The kind of pain a bandage or a pill couldn’t cure. Especially if he never forgave her for spying on him, and never loved her in return.
